Artist's Comments

"Closing your eyes to disappear
You pray your dreams will leave you here
But still you wake and know the truth
No-one's there...

Say Goodnight
Don't be afraid
Holding me, holding me
As you fade to black..."
- 'My Last Breath', (C) Evanescence

This is a real change in direction from my normal light hearted Disney stuff but this is the mental image I get whenever I listen to 'My Last Breath' - a woman telling her lover she's going to die but reassuring him at the same time. So this is my interpretation. It's coloured mostly in colouring pencils with a chalk backdrop and I've tried to give it a dark, gothic feel. I wanted the guy's face to express his immense grief and make it contrast with the woman's dead, lifeless form. Also, the guy's skin is very grey and shadowy while the woman's is more stark white (reference to the 'Sweet Raptured Light'). I don't really like the man's shirt but otherwise I was pleased as it was really hard to put my mental imagery onto paper. The figures have a sort of yellowy outline as it's meant to be light fading into the dark night - ie death. The rose was just a sentimental afterthought - the message originally said 'I love thee...' but decided to change it to 'Sweet Raptur'd Light' cos it had more relevance. Anyway, I can think of a million more quotes and song lyrics relevant to this so it's open to your own interpretation.

You're welcome to add CONSTRUCTIVE criticism if you really want but I've put it as Discouraged cos this is quite a personal piece and I don't want lots of negative comments. Anyway, hope you like it! :)

Song lyrics - (C) Evanescence
Design - (C) ME!

Edit: I've just looked in the album leaflet and the lyrics are actually 'CALLING me', not 'HOLDING me'! Bum. Oh well.

By the way, it's probably best if you use full view to see all the details.

Wow... love the piece. I never actually got that idea from that song, but now that you mention it... o.o Perhaps... :XD: Nonetheless, I love the artwork. I think you did an excellent job putting your mental image on paper. Wish I could do that... only not on paper... on the computer.... >_>;; heheeh Great work!
